Letting Go to Move Forward: 3 Biblical Ways to Release What Holds You Back

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” – Hebrews 12:1

Fall is a season of visible change. Trees release their leaves, not because they are dying, but because it’s part of their growth. If they held on, new life could not emerge in the spring. In the same way, we often hold onto things—fear, unforgiveness, and unhealthy habits—that keep us from moving forward in faith.

Imagine trying to climb a mountain while dragging a suitcase full of rocks. You might still make progress, but it will be exhausting and slow. Spiritually, we often do the same when we cling to past hurts, regrets, unforgiveness, or sins. Hebrews 12:1 calls us to throw off everything that hinders so that we can run with perseverance the race God has designed for us.

The good news? We don’t have to do this in our own strength. Prayer and Scripture are powerful tools God gives us to break free and run unhindered.

1. Identify and Release Through Prayer

Start by asking God in prayer to reveal what’s weighing you down. Is it worry about the future? Bitterness toward someone? Fear of failure? Name it before the Lord. Scripture reminds us in 1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

  • Practical Step: Write down one burden on a piece of paper. Pray over it, then symbolically tear it up or place it in your Bible as a declaration that you’ve surrendered it to God.

2. Renew Your Mind with the Word

The enemy often tries to entangle us through lies—“You’ll never change,” “You’re not good enough,” or “God won’t forgive you.” Combat these lies by filling your mind with truth. Romans 12:2 reminds us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

  • Practical Step: Find a verse that speaks directly against your struggle. If it’s fear, cling to 2 Timothy 1:7. If it’s shame, declare Romans 8:1. Speak it daily until your heart aligns with God’s Word.

3. Persevere with a Prayer Plan

Letting go is rarely a one-time decision—it’s a daily practice. Prayer helps us stay consistent. When you feel the weight creeping back in, go to God immediately. Philippians 4:6-7 promises that when we bring our requests to Him with thanksgiving, His peace will guard our hearts and minds.

  • Practical Step: Set aside a specific time each day to pray over the areas you’re releasing. Consistency will build perseverance, just as Hebrews 12:1 encourages us to run with endurance.

And lastly remember that letting go isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary for growth. Just as the trees release their leaves to prepare for new life, God is calling you to release what hinders so you can walk in freedom. Through prayer and Scripture, you can find the strength to throw off the weights and run your race with joy and perseverance.
