Choose Gratitude |Notice the Good

Giving thanks is easy when the prayer has been answered. It’s much harder when a relationship has changed, finances are tight, the news was disappointing, or you’re simply tired. Then you read, “In every thing give thanks,” and wonder how.

Valarie points out what this verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t call everything happening to us good. It invites a posture of thanksgiving in the middle of it. Biblical gratitude makes room for two truths at once: this is hard, and God is still faithful. You can grieve and give thanks. You can be disappointed and still worship. Like the psalmists, we can pour out our pain honestly and still turn our eyes back to His character. Gratitude may not change your circumstances right away, but it can change the way you stand in them. The prayer refuses to pretend the hurt isn’t there, while asking God for strength for today, peace for what we can’t control, and a heart that can still say thank You.

Scripture anchor: 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
