Why Emotions Can Cloud Spiritual Discernment and How to Find God’s Wisdom | Walking in Spiritual Discernment

Have you ever followed a feeling — one that seemed so right in the moment — only to find it led you somewhere you never meant to go? Fear makes us hesitate. Excitement makes us rush ahead. Discouragement makes us quit too soon.

In this week’s devotional, Valarie opens week two of Walking in Spiritual Discernment with an honest look at how our emotions distort the way we interpret situations and hear God’s direction. She reminds us that God created our emotions — but never intended them to lead. They’re indicators, not directors: they reveal what’s happening inside us, but they aren’t reliable guides for decision-making. Prayer creates the space between our emotions and our decisions, slowing us down long enough to ask, “Father, what are You saying about this situation?” Anchored in James 1:5, she prays that God’s wisdom would rise above our feelings and that His Word would lead us instead. Discernment is a skill, and prayer is how we fine-tune it.
